Then you can write your own simple programs and see how software is made.
Once you're familiar with that, get a game programming book!

One of the best books on beginning game development from scratch, you'll need a basic grasp of
C/C++ (see above). Takes you from almost zero to a level where you can make games,
contains concepts that will not age :)

If you've mastered the above books, you're really serious about this. Code Complete gives you
a complete guide to software construction, how to avoid most bugs and problems and how to
look differently at your code.

When you're through, you have what it takes to conjure up serious games, so go ahead and make
a few that really work! Then the world is your oyster and the following books can fill up
any gaps remaining in your knowledge.
